The artist who brought techno to the world’s biggest stages
Long before electronic live acts became arena spectacles, Paul Kalkbrenner had already proven that techno could captivate tens of thousands of people without losing its essence. Choosing early on to leave traditional DJing behind, he built a career around performing only his own music, pioneering a live format that would become one of the most distinctive in electronic music.
Raised in Berlin during the years following the fall of the Wall, Kalkbrenner grew alongside the city’s emerging techno culture. His international breakthrough came with the landmark film Berlin Calling, in which he starred while also composing its soundtrack. Its standout track, Sky and Sand, went on to become one of the defining electronic records of the 21st century, remaining on the German singles chart for an unprecedented 121 weeks—a record that still stands today.
Across eight studio albums and more than 130 original productions, Kalkbrenner has built one of electronic music’s most recognisable catalogues. His performances have filled iconic venues such as Berlin’s Waldbühne and Wuhlheide, while in 2014 he became the first techno artist to perform on Tomorrowland’s Mainstage. That same year, he was invited by the German Federal Government to perform in front of more than 400,000 people during the celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Despite his global success, Paul Kalkbrenner has remained committed to the same philosophy that shaped his career from the very beginning: creating and performing music entirely on his own terms, with a sound that remains instantly recognisable.
This September, Paul Kalkbrenner returns to reworks, presenting his new album alongside the timeless productions that have defined his remarkable career. One of electronic music’s most celebrated live performances returns to Thessaloniki as one of the highlights of reworks 2026.
